The three things that make a small business site feel slow

When a small business site feels slow, the instinct is to blame the platform or the hosting. In practice it is almost always one of three boring, fixable things.

1. Oversized images

A photo straight off a phone can be several megabytes. Browsers still have to download the whole thing before shrinking it to fit a small box on the page. This is the single most common cause of a slow-feeling site, and the easiest to fix: resize and compress images to roughly the size they are actually displayed at.

2. Too many third-party scripts

Chat widgets, tracking pixels, font services and page builders each add their own request before the page can finish loading. Any one of them is harmless. Five or six stacked together, each waiting on a different server, is where the delay actually comes from.

3. No caching or compression on the server

This one is invisible to whoever built the site, because it lives in server configuration, not in the page itself. If the same files are sent uncompressed on every single visit, a visitor on a weaker mobile connection feels it directly, even though the page itself is not unusually large.

The pattern

None of these require a framework change or a redesign. They require someone to actually look at what the page sends over the network, not just how it looks in a browser tab that already has everything cached.
